Definition of Dysentery

Dysentery (formerly known as Flux or the blood flux) broadly refers to a gastrointestinal disorder characterized by inflammation of the intestine, chiefly colon.

According to WHO:Β  Dysentery is any episode of diarrhea in which blood is prevented in loose, Waterly stools.

Signs and symptoms Dysentery

Dysentery causes irritation and inflammation of intestine.

Common symptoms

  1. Abdominal bloating.
  2. Abdominal pain.
  3. Blood diarrhea.
  4. Nausea with or without vomiting.
  5. Decrease urine output.
  6. Feeling very thirsty.
  7. Fever and chills.
  8. Weight loss.

Cause of Dysentery

The bacteria such as Shigella, E. Coli, and the amoeba entamoeba histolytica are the most common,Β  Dysentery is caused by drinking water or eating food from sources contaminated.

Treatment of Dysentery

Antibiotics are used inΒ treatment of Dysentery.

  1. Ceftriaxone (Rocephin)
  2. Ciprofloxacin (cipro)
  3. Trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole (Bactrim, septa).
