Muscle of pectoral region

Table of Contents

The pectoral region has four muscles which are the Pectoralis major, Pectoralis minor, Subclavis, and Serratus anterior muscle . The origin, insertion, nerve supply, and their action are given below.ย

Pectoralis Major

Thin /Flat /Fan shaped Spiral and twisted muscle

  • Origin

      1. Clavicular Head

Medial 1/2 of anterior aspect of clavical

Lateral 1/2 of the anterior surface of the sternum (upto 6th costal cartilage )

    ย  ย 2. Sternal head

    Aponuroses of external oblique muscle

  • Insertion

At the lateral lip of the Intertubercle sulcus

  • Nerve Supply

    1. Lateral pectoral nerve
    2. Medial pectoral nerve
  • Action

    1. Clavical head – Flexion of arm
    2. Sternocostal part – Adduction / Medial rotation of the arm.
  • Clinical Anatomy

If a sternocostal muscle fiber is missing there will be weakening in the Adduction and medial rotation of the arm.

Pectoralis major muscle

Pectoralis Minor

    • Origin

From 3rd/4th/5th Rib near the costal cartilage

    • Insertion

It form thick tendon ( Medial Border of upper surface of coracoid process of scapula )

    • Nerve supply

      1. Medial and Lateral nerve
      2. Pectoral nerve
    • Action

      1. It Assest the serratus Anterior muscle in drawing the scapula forward
      2. Depression point of shoulder
      3. Accessory muscle of respiration
Pectoralis minor muscle

Subclavius

      • Origin

It arises from the 1st Rib costochondral Junction

      • Insertion

Insertion into a subclavian groove on the inferior surface of clavicle

      • Nerve Supply

        Nerve to subclavius muscle

      • Action

Stabilize the clavicle during movement of the shoulder

Subclavius muscle

Serratus anterior muscle

It is a broad sheath of muscle from boundary of the axilla

  • Origin

    Upper 8/9 Ribs

  • Insertion

Insert into the costal surface of the scapula along the medial border.

  • Nerve supply

    Long thoracic nerve / Bell’s Nerve ( c5,c6,c7)

  • Action

Pectoral minor and along with Serratus anterior muscle help in

    • Pull to scapula forward around the chest wall. It is also called the Boxer muscle.
    • Keep the Medial border scapula in opposition to the chest wall
    • Lower fibers serratus anterior ( It rotates the scapula laterally upward )
    • help in overhead Abduction of the arm.
