Indication and contraindication of UVR

Indication of URV

Acne

Acne is a skin condition that occurs when your hair follicles become plugged with oil and dead skin cell. Also called Ache Vulgaris.

An E2 dose of ultraviolet radiation may be given

Aim
  1. An erythema will bring more blood to the skin and so improve the condition of skin.
  2. Desquamation (Peeling skin) will remove come domes ( the primary sign of acne, a small bump on the skin ), thus reducing the number of lesions.
  3. sterilization effects of UVR.

TreatmentΒ

The condition returns within a few weeks of UVR. Unfortunately, it may get worse a week after UVR, as all the lesions in the skin reach their peak at the same time, whereas in the normal course of acne, some will be resolving as others develop.

Psoriasis

Psoriasis is autoimmune condition that causes inflammation in the skin. The UVR is given.

Aim

  1. To decrease the rate of DNA synthesis in the cell of the skin
  2. Slow down their proliferation

Treatment

it can be given using Leeds Regimen or PUVA

Leed regimen
  • A Sub – erythemal dose ( half E1 ) is given to the patient, using a Theraktin tunnel or air-cooled lamp at 100cm
  • The dose is repeated daily, increasing by 12-half each tim

PUVA

    • Before usage of PUVA, we must take sensitizing drug Psoralen ( Two hours before)
    • The dosage depends on the type of skin

Vitiligo

Vitiligo cause the skin to lose color or pigmentation. Smooth white or light areas called macules or patches appear on the skin. There is the destruction of melanocytes by our immune system. It is an autoimmune disease.

Formation of Vitamin – D

  • Mild dose for the formation of vitamin – D
  • Avoid sunlight and wear dark glasses during daylight to protect the eyes

Infected wounds

Ulcer, pressure sored, or surgical incisions. The aim is to remove the slough ( infected dead material) and promote repair.

Treatment

Using Kromayar lamp with E3 or E4

Non-infected wounds

Not infected by or with something (such as a pathogen): not marked by infection. UVR aims to stimulate the growth of granulation tissue and thus speed up repair.

Treatment

Longer UVR stimulates growth, so any kind of filter is used which can allow only UVA and not UVB.

  • An E1 dose is given to increase circulation through the area and improve skin condition.

Contraindication of uvr

  1. Hypersensitivity to sunlight: some patients react adversely to sunlight and are not treated with UVR.
  2. DXT: Deep X-ray therapy produces local hypersensitivity to UV and patient with this is not treated with UV
  3. Erythema: Erythema is abnormal redness of skin or mucous membranes. Capillary congestion causes the condition, and red splotches on hands or feet are classic.
  4. Eczema: A disease that makes your skin red and dry so that you want to scratch it
  5. Lupus erythematosus: Lupus erythematosus is an autoimmune disease in which the immune system attacks its tissues, causing widespread inflammation and tissue damage in the affected organs.
  6. Herpes simplex: herpes simplex virus (HSV), known as herpes, is a common infection that can cause painful blisters or ulcers. It’s  viral infection that causes genital and oral herpes. Many people live asymptomatic.
